How to store veg in the heat?

With successive heatwaves, some of our vegetables might need a bit more care than usually to withstand the heat. Here’s a reminder of how best to store and access your veg bag to keep it fresh as long as possible.

  • Try to collect your bag as close to delivery time as possible, so it doesn’t sit out for longer than it needs.
  • Whole lettuce heads want to be in the crisper drawer, ideally wrapped in a paper towel and a loose plastic bag to maintain a balance humidity. To prevent any slimy leaves, you can keep changing the paper towel every couple of days.
  • Salad bags prefer a drier environment. Keep salad leaves dry and in a sealed bag, in the crisper drawer. Fresh green leaves are best stored
  • Tomatoes are best kept somewhere cool and dark, like on the side. Storing tomatoes in the fridge can impair their flavour. To keep them fresh for longer, avoid placing them in direct sunlight.
  • Cucumbers and courgettes last longer in the fridge, but can be sensitive to the cold. For best lasting results, wrap them in a paper towel, place in a breathable bag and keep in the crisping drawer.
